Inverclyde: Speak up Inverclyde

Speak Up is a group of young people based in Inverclyde who have come together to have a say on the issues affecting them. The group has been involved in No Knives, Better Lives since the very beginning of the campaign. They’ve been speaking to other groups, getting their opinions and thoughts on the issue and spreading the word through events and activities. They also unveiled the No Knives, Better Lives pledge appeal. Check out their Bebo page here.

Edinburgh

In Edinburgh, No Knives, Better Lives is running in the north of the city and is a partnership between the Scottish Government, Lothian and Borders Police and City of Edinburgh Council. The campaign is sending out the message that this type of serious criminal behaviour will not be tolerated. The programme will reach out to young people and peer groups to highlight the fact that carrying an offensive weapon is completely unacceptable.  Partners in Edinburgh will also be working with the wider public to reassure them that we are working together to make their community safer.

Glasgow

In Glasgow the campaign will run across the city, with a mobile street football deployment in each of Glasgow's five localities - north, east, west, south east and south west. The areas within each locality have been identified as geographical hotspots by Glasgow Community and Safety Services following analysis of information from a range of sources including GCSS, Strathclyde Police, the community and other key partners.

Clackmannanshire

No Knives, Better Lives in Clackmannanshire is a collaboration between the Scottish Government, Central Scotland Police, Clackmannanshire Council and other local partners. The local Clackmannanshire No Knives, Better Lives programme was launched at a Gala Day on Saturday 3rd July 2010. Throughout the summer, No Knives, Better Lives will directly target young people in Clackmannanshire through a range of diversionary activities. Youth workers and community wardens will engage the young people in brief inventions around the issue of knife crime. A tailored advertising campaign aimed at the wider community in Clackmannanshire will reassure local residents that the Scottish Government, Central Scotland Police and Clackmannanshire Council are working together to keep their communities safe.

Renfrewshire

West Dunbartonshire

In West Dunbartonshire, the No Knives, Better Lives campaign is a partnership between the Scottish Government, West Dunbartonshire Council, Strathclyde Police and a host of voluntary partners. A number of partners in West Dunbartonshire work together under the banner of the Pulse to provide high quality diversionary activities for young people.  These partners include the Early Intervention Team, Streetlinks, Y Sort it, SPARC Community Arts, Leisure Services and Sports Development.  A fresh push of activity from the No Knives Better Lives campaign kicks off in January to further promote the nationwide initiative in West Dunbartonshire. Following October’s launch of No Knives Better Lives in West Dunbartonshire, which included a range of diversionary activities and a community roadshow, this new stage of the campaign will feature hard-hitting posters highlighting the consequences if young people choose to pick up a knife. A second series of ‘Choose Life’ posters, chalk stencils and youth football pitch advertising will promote local diversionary activities that depict the life-changing choice between ‘knife or life’ that many young people face.
