Just one more!

Discussing our relationship with alcohol.

You will need...

Timing: 15mins

This discussion uses facts about young people's consumption of alcohol in Scotland and its impact.

It asks young people to think about our drinking culture and what we can do to take control of it. There is also a link to a BBC Teach video on Alan's story, which you are welcome to watch with the group.

What do you think about drinking alcohol at big celebrations like birthdays, weddings and funerals?

83% of 16-24 year olds in Scotland consume alcohol. What immediate and longer-term impacts will this have on our health?

Over the past 30 years, figures show a 200% increase in hospitalisations of 15 to 24 year olds in Scotland for alcohol related causes, and a 500% rise in the number of 15 to 24 years olds treated for alcohol psychosis (a severe mental disorder).

Why do you think the health impacts are getting worse?

In 2012, the Scottish Parliament passed the Alcohol (Minimum Pricing) (Scotland) Act 2012 which allowed Scottish Ministers to introduce a system of minimum unit pricing for alcohol.

Is this a good way to help us reduce our drinking culture?

Why do so many young people think that binge drinking is better than controlled drinking? And what can you do to control the amount you drink once you've started?
