No One Cares

Sometime when you are dealing with big issues, it can feel like no one cares. However, there is a whole community of support that exists. The aim of this module is to help young people recognise the trusted adults in their lives and support available to them within their communities.

Timing: 1 hour 30 minutes

  • Flip chart or whiteboard with markers
  • Device with internet access
  • Handout per group  - Community Mapping 
  • Pens, pencils and post-it notes
  • Ball/item to pass around

Instructions

Start by...

  • Introduce the session by explaining that you are going to be exploring the resources and adults available within your community to help girls and young woman. 
  • Discuss:
    • What is the importance of this? 
    • Define the terms 'trusted adult' and 'safe place'

Activity: 

  • Passing the ball/item around the room, ask leaners to share one positive experience or resource in their community related to promoting positive relationships among girls.
  • Facilitate a brief discussion on the strengths within their community that can be used to reduce youth violence.

Middle bit...

Community Mapping 
  • Using the presentation to help, define community mapping and its relevance to identifying resources and support networks.
  • Discuss the benefits of mapping people and places within the community who can help, including increased awareness, access, and resources.
Our Community
    • Divide learners into small groups and provide each group with a community mapping template.
    • Facilitate a brainstorming session where groups identify and map out existing resources, organisations and support networks in their community related to violence prevention and support for girls.
    • Encourage participants to be inclusive and comprehensive in their mapping, considering both formal and informal resources.

End by...

  • Ask leaners to attach their community maps to the wall and invite everyone to take a walk around to view each other's work.
  • Facilitate a reflection and discussion on the similarities and anything that's from their ideas. 
  • Discuss:
    • how some of these can be used to address violence between girls.
    • how can we ensure everyone is aware of the support available?

Extension: Create a large vision map of the community, signposting support and resources available.
