Encouraging young people to think about their online circles, identifying how close they are to potential risks.

What you will need

You will need...

Timing: 45 minutes

  • Pens
  • Post-it notes
  • Flipchart paper
  • Online High Video

Instructions

Start by...

1. Play a clip from Online High (1:10 - 3:34).

2. After watching the video, ask:

  • Do you think he knows everyone he's messaging?
  • How often do we have strangers in our online circles? What risks does this bring?
  • Why do you think he uses Snapchat?
    • Discuss the features of apps like Snapchat and how they can be exploited by drug dealers.
  • Have you ever shared something that spread further than you expected?

3. Relate this to them personally. Remember to continue to relate everything back to drugs and the video.

  • How many of your online 'friends' do you know in real life?
  • What risks come with accepting friend requests from people you don’t know?
  • How does peer pressure influence online behavior?
  • Discuss the ripple effect of online actions and the potential risks of exposure to harmful content, like drugs.

Middle bit...

4. Split the young people into small groups and give them the relationship circle template or ask them to draw three circles within each other (see powerpoint).

Explain what each of the circles mean:

Centre Circle: People you trust and interact with a lot.

Middle Circle: Friends or acquaintances you interact with occasionally.

Outer Circle: People you barely know or have only met online.

Beyond the Circles: Strangers who may follow or access your content.

5. Ask the young people to think about their social media accounts and place people (e.g. close friends, followers, random commenters) into the appropriate circles.

  • Some of these will be different for different people ie. some people are closer to certain family members than others. Ask them to think generically where they would put people.

6. Encourage them to think about...

  • Who has access to your personal information?
  • How well do you know these people?
  • Have you ever interacted with someone suspicious or inappropriate?

7. Once the groups have finished, get them to think about the potential risks within their circles. Use the Post-it notes to highlight them and how they are a risk. Ask them to think about where people, such as those selling drugs could access them.

  • Ask them to think about how someone with bad intentions, like the drug dealer in the video, could use these connections to reach them.

8. Bring everyone back together and share their circles and the identified risks within them. Discuss:

  • How many people in your outer circles or beyond might have access to your posts?
  • What methods might drug dealers use to connect with young people online?
  • How can you protect yourself from these risks?

TIP: Discuss the importance of privacy settings online, not sharing personal information publicly and being careful who you connect with online.

9. Ask the young people to think about changes they could  make to their social media accounts after this session. Write these on post-it notes and display them on a board or wall.
