To think about how roles and responsibilities are divided by gender.
What you will need
Instructions
Hand out blank sheets of paper (or use fa lip chart) and write up the hours of the day from 7.00 a.m. to midnight. Then draw a vertical line down the middle. On one side write men and on the other side write women. Explain that we are going to look at typical male and female roles.
Either as a whole group (with a flip-chart) or in pairs, discuss and write in either side what roles men and women take on throughout the day.
If you have a big group, you can look at different ages. For example teenagers, parents, young professionals and senior managers, with each pair or sub-group looking at a different category.
Come back together to look at your answers. What does it say about gender roles in Scotland? What if we swapped the genders and asked men to do the things in the women's column?
Is there anything on the men's side that you would think of as masculine (or feminine for the women)?
